“You have recaptured the essence of triathlon with this event... it felt like my first triathlons in '82. What you recreated was that special combination of high end athletics and a collegial informality that made the event 'fun' for me.” – John Hughes
24 & 8 Hours of Triathlon are on-road triathlons with a 0.24 mile (386 m) swim, 11.2 mile (18.0 km) bike, 2.6 mile (4.2 km) run. Each race consists of repeated loops and a dedicated support crew area.
Transition Area
The transition area will be provided with bike racks for competitors who want to use a traditional triathlon transition zone. We recommend that each team and solo athlete uses the support crew area to maximize their enjoyment and the efficiency of their race. This will make your experience more efficient and comfortable.
Support Crew and Pit Area
We strongly recommend each solo athlete has at least one support crew, although it is possible to race solo without one. Teams may be self supported since only one athlete is on course at any given time, but it is easier if you include at least one person to help you in the support crew / pit area. Additional support crew can make your race faster, more fun when you get in from each course leg and safer on the drive home! The pit area is a parking lot and each team is allocated 2-4 car spaces (depending on team size). Parking is allowed starting Friday afternoon.
Swim Course (0.24 mile / 386 meters / 422 yards)
This is a single lap open water swim in Cherry Creek Reservoir and is clearly marked with buoys. Kayaks will lead and sweep the first lap, with additional kayaks and motor boats patrolling for the rest of the race. Water temperatures are expected to be around 65 degrees. The elevation at the start is approximately 5550 feet above sea level.
Wetsuits are highly recommended. Swimming is prohibited during dark hours. Competitors may not enter the water after 6:45pm Saturday and may commence swimming again at 6:45am on Sunday. Water temperature could be as low as 60 degrees and you can see the current temp here.
Bike Course (11.2 miles / 18.0 km)
Biking is on smooth paved roads with bike lanes and all roads are open to traffic. Police and course marshals will be at intersections and there is one aid station at the west reservoir entrance turn around. The high point on the bike course is 5650 feet and the low point is 5550 ft, elevation gain is approximately 200 feet.
Run Course (2.6 miles / 4.2 km)
Athlete’s run east out of the transition area following asphalt and gravel running trails, as well as on the return. The course is out and back with one aid station at the turn around. There is approximately 30 feet of elevation gain. The total run distance is 2.62 miles when added to the run-to-swim and swim-to-run.
Aid Stations
There is one aid station on the bike and one aid station on the run, each about half way through each leg. Aid stations supply GU, GU2O and water and we do not provide cups. You will have to fill your own water bottle(s) or hydration bladder from our coolers.
Medical Support
We have 24 hour dedicated medical support at the transition/pit area and on-course. Medical support is shared by event medical staff and ambulance services.
